How to demote a domain controller in Windows Server 2012 R2
You might be wondering that, I am going to run DCPROMO and demote the server. But it is not the case in Windows Server 2012. DCPROMO has been removed from latest version of OS and now you have to use GUI. Below is the error message you would get after running DCPROMO on Domain Controller.
Steps to Demote domain controller 2012
In Windows Server 2012 R2, we can use Server Manager or Powershell to Demote windows server 2012 domain controller. But in this article I am going to user GUI method to make it simple. So, here are the steps.
Explore Server Manager and on the right hand side of it find Manage and click “Remove Roles and Features” option.
Before you begin window is to review and notify you to save data on the server.
In Windows Server 2012, you can also promote or https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server-docs/identity/ad-ds/deploy/demoting-domain-controllers-and-domains--level-200-" target="_blank">demote servers remotely, so make sure to check, “Select a Server from Server pool” and select correct hostname. Click Next
On the Remove Server roles wizard, select Active Directory Domain Services and click Next.
Once you click on ADDS role, it will ask to remove features related to ADDS.
On the Remove Roles and Features Wizard, click on Demote this Domain Controller
On the Active Directory Domain Services Wizard, Enter Domain Admin credentials and click Next.
Take Care of Warnings
On the Warnings wizard, select the default options and click Next.
On the New Administrator Password wizard, put the password you would like to use it after demotion of the server. And Click Next
Finalize - Windows server 2012 demote domain controller
Review your demotion options and click on the Demote button. Demotion process would start and it would take time depends the performance of the server.
Demotion has been completed and now server would be a member of the domain.You have to perform cleanup of the object from AD sites n Services. In the next Article, we will see how to demote Domain Controller 2012 forcefully.
