Definite solution for “dns_probe_finished_bad_config” error

Are you stuck on “dns_probe_finished_bad_config” error on your browser ?whether it’s Chrome, IE or Mozilla? and not able to access Internet? It is really not a good sign if you are stuck in between and would like to do research on the internet. dns_probe_finished_bad_config this error may occur on Windows 7, Windows 8 or Windows 10 as it is totally depends on your Internet connections and some of your Operating system's TCP/IP settings.


The question always comes in the mind, why now? I have to complete this ASAP, and this Internet is making my day bad.

So, here are some of the solutions you can follow and resolve the issue.

Method 1: Check your Internet cable & Router

First things first, and you have to check the Power connection to your Router, Internet cables are correctly connected the device and all the lights are blinking correctly. If lights are not blinking correctly then there could be an issue with your ISP and you have to contact them first to resolve the issue.

Once you are done with the cabling & connection troubleshooting and if all the cables are correctly connected then move on the next step.

Method 2:- On how to resolve “dns_probe_finished_bad_config” Error

This error basically happens when your computer is unable to resolve the DNS or it does not find DNS server to connect and provide you Internet connection.

On your keyboard press Windows key => type cmd and to open command prompt hit Enter.

Or Windows Key+R => type cmd and press Enter it will open command prompt as shown in below print screen.

On the cmd type ipconfig /all and press enter. It will show your computer's NIC configuration. It contains IP address, MAC, DNS, DHCP (if any) etc.



Now, use ipconfig /release to release IP configuration of the computer.

Type Ipconfig /flushdns in the command prompt and then press enter to flush the DNS settings of the computer.

And then ipconfig /renew to renew it again.

Check if this solves your issue or not… If answer is no, then move on to next steps to troubleshoot more on this topic.

Method 3:- On How to resolve “dns_probe_finished_bad_config” Error

Reset the Winsock catalog from your computer and from command prompt enter below command without quotes and hit enter.

"Netsh winsock reset"



Once this catalog is reset, Reboot the computer and check if it works for your issue.

If still you are not able to access the Internet and getting the error, then try out next step.

Method 4:- Check your DNS settings in the NIC configuration

Disclaimer: - If, you are a home user and if this issue is happening in your home PC or laptops then follow these steps. And if this issue is with Office computer which is in Domain then you have to check domain DNS IP address.

To change the DNS settings; on your keyboard press Windows Key + R to open Run dialog box. In the Run dialog box type ncpa.cpl to open Network Connections.


Right Click on the Network adapter and it will open Ethernet Properties. Left click on the IPv4 and left click on the Properties.

On the IPv4 Properties dialog box, select Use the Following DNs Server Addresses radio button and enter IP address in the Preferred DNS Server and in the Secondary DNS Server.

 Now, it should resolve dns_probe_finished_bad_config  issue in your browser and you would be able to access the internet.

Method 6:- Run Windows Update

To help your system to protect from malicious softwares and malwares, also to resolve some of the Windows related issues you should update your Operating System to latest Security patches.

To update Windows with security patches follow the below steps.

On your keyboard press Windows key + R and go to Run. It will open Run window and in the Run window type wuapp(This works only for Windows 7 Operating System.) and hit enter. 

For Windows 10 Operating System follow below print screens.





On the Windows update, select Check for updates and it will scan updates for your computer from the MS update servers and will suggest you security patches to install. Select the Security Patches and install them to update your Operating System.


 dns_probe_finished_bad_config  error may take some of your time to completely get resolved. You may be able to access internet by trying one of the step or you may have to follow all the steps until you resolve.
